Ça va? & inspiration for the new workingplace

We were invited by the French Clémence of the blog Kutch et Couture for an interview about our studio. You can read it here in French, or a summary below:

Where does this taste for origami come from?
When studying architecture I worked a lot with scale models, I prefered using paper. The thing I like most of origami is that you can use the folds as a structure of the design without adding other materials. Origami gives a smile on people faces, as almost everybody can fold a paper airplane

Why did you choose to create lightings?
We are still figuring out whether we are a lightstudio specializing in paper or a paperstudio specializing in lampshades, we still have to choose.

If you had to define your lamps in 3 words?
Happy, lightweight and simplicity

A high point in the life of Studio Snowpuppe?
The moment we were able to quit our day jobs..

Inspiration for the new studio:
We moved in the studio last May. At this moment we are busy with the basement. Creating a space for storage and product development.  I can watch this video about the workspace of Grain and Gram over and over again.

The little moments make the life big > Moth XXL

We like the size of our first lamp the Moth, I guess that is Dutch modesty. Then people kept asking about bigger sizes of the Moth lamps. Our startingpoint was our own small home in Scheveningen. So we moved to a bigger home and introduced the Moth XL. Then this question came: Can you make a bigger lamp then the Moth XL? This time we didn't move but we were able to do a shoot of the Moth XXL in the shop of Edwin Pelser.

Paper making Masterclass at the DDW

Yesterday we were at the Dutch Design week. We started the day with a meet-up about the 'nieuwe maakeconome' in the glass house of Dynamic food. We gave a short presentation, pecha kucha style, about the start-up of Snowpuppe.

After that I was lucky to participate one of the Masterclasses organised by Etsy and the CraftscouncilMarieke de Hoop taught us all about making the perfect pulp. We brought our own materials, I brought some waste paper of our lamps and combined it with some old jeans. The process was fun, especially making the pulp with your hands.

There was not many time time visiting the rest of the DDW. But in this spare time I was able to see the lamps of Vilt aan zee. Made out of Merino wool with some paper pulp.

Autumn yellow

Last weekend we spend a whole day outside searching for chestnuts. This trip also inspired us to take a close look at our own version of the Chestnut.

Monday Mornings // DDW, Etsy, How blogs work

Goodmorning monday 13 October of 2014

I am preparing a presentation for the DDW about the 'nieuwe maakeconomie'. It will be Pecha Kucha style, so 20 slides about a succesfull start up as an Etsy seller.

This made me think about the feeling I had when I sold the very first lamp through Etsy. It was for a Bed and Breakfast in New York! From that day I believed it was possible to have a business of your own working with your hands.

The first lamp was very different then the lamps we make nowadays, but the idea was the same. Last week I googled the B&B and look what I found on their Facebook page.

When people ask me about how to sell your own product, my first answer always is start selling on Etsy. The next week we will share our 20 slides why we are selling on Etsy. Why are you selling on Etsy?

Booktip: How blogs work

This weekend I found in our local bookshop the book of Stephanie Duval: How blogs work
Stephanie was one of our first customers and blogged about studio Snowpuppe in the early days. I almost read the whole book during the weekend and I cannot wait to try all the tips.

Snowpuppe:

Welcome to our independent studio. Here we design and make paper lamps for the home and for public spaces like libraries. We use natural materials, mostly paper and some wood. We are proud that all our lamps are made by hand and by small-scale production in the Netherlands.

We like to be as close to the sea as possible, that’s why our studio is based in Scheveningen.

This blog will be about us, we will take you on tour, share our ideas and how we work. We will introduce the Snowpuppe team to you through these blog.
